In the story, different statues on the Path of Illumination (created by Gian Lorenzo Bernini) represent different clues meant to lead Robert Langdon and Vittoria Vetra to the last remaining Illuminati member, before he destroys The Vatican.

Angels and Demons Synopsis
Harvard professor Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) discovers the existence of an ancient society called the Illuminati. He sets out to find them using the Path of Illumination before The Vatican is destroyed while in conclave to elect a new pope.
