On May 19, 2008 Daniel Bailey Jr., a Countrywide Financial Corp. mortgage customer, emailed the CEO of the company, Angelo Mozilo, among others, asking for the company to modify the terms of his loan so he would not lose his home of 16 years.
Moments later, Bailey received a response from Mozilo that referred to his plea as "disgusting." Mozilo had intended to forward the email to a colleague, but accidentally replied to the original message instead.
Bailey promptly posted the exchange on the LoanSafe.org's message boards. The exchange sparked heated debate on housing websites.
Countrywide has issued a statement apologizing on behalf of the company and Mozilo for what it calls a "misunderstanding."
