Andy Serkis was born and raised in Middlsex, England. His family name was originally Sarkisian and is Armenian in origin. Serkis attended Lancaster University, where he studied visual art.
Serkis has had a lengthy career on stage and in film, and he was catapulted into the international spotlight for providing the voice and movement for the character of Gollum in Peter Jackson's The Lord Of The Rings films. He also provided the voice and movement for Kong in Peter Jackson's (2005) remake of King Kong.
