Android MID (Mobile Internet Device) is rumored to be a handheld Internet device running Google Android operating system. The device is rumored to have 5" touch screen with Google Software. At this very early stage it is rumored to be available from companies like Dell [1], SmiT[2] and others who license the Android operating system.
At this time, no Android MID devices being released by US companies. One of the companies outside US which made this device is SmartDevices (from China).[3] It is called Android MID SmartQ5 and available for pre-order from GeekStuff4u for ¥ 26,000.00 (or U$287) with devliery date End of October 2010.[4] with options of different languages.
Features and Functions
Early rumor suggests that Android MID is to have between 4 to 12 inch WVGA multi touch screen with the resolution of 800 x 480 running Android 2.0. Other key features include 3G wireless network and wireless connectives, 5 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, microSD card slot for additional memory. [1][2]
Early report by the Wall Street Journal suggests that Dell engineers have been developing Android MID devices. However, a Dell spokesman have declined to comment. Instead, it has been reported that Dell has been developing Android based smart phones.[3]
The currently available Android MID SmartQ5 has 4.3 inch (with resolution of 800 x 480). It also features built-in WiFi and Bluetooth for a true Mobile Internet Device setup. For storate there is a 1GB flash memory (256MB available to users) with support of external SD/SDHC card (up to 32GB). It uses Samsung S3C6410 ARM 11 Core 667 MHz for the CPU.
Contents support is quiet extensive. It ranges from HTML, CHM, PalmDoc, RTF (for documents), JPEG, GIF, PNG and BMP (for images), H.264, AVI, XVID, DIVX, FLV (for videos), MP3, OGG, WMA, FLAC, AAC, WAV (for music) amongst others.
The SmartQ5 has no 3G wireless, GPRS receiver and camera.
