Prior to playing in the NCAA, Luck played at Stratford High School in Houston, Texas. He comes from a football family, with his father, Oliver Luck, a former National Football League player for the Houston Oilers from 1983 to 1986. Freshman Season
Redshirting in 2008, Luck played his first season with the Stanford Cardinal in 2009, serving as their starting quarterback. He played in all 12 regular-season games in 2009, leading the Cardinal to an 8-4 record. Luck's statistically best game came on October 24, 2010, against the Arizona Wildcats football team, which happened to be a 43-38 loss. Luck finished the season with 2,575 yards, a school record for passing by a freshman, and 13 touchdowns, helping Stanford record a team-best 434 points of offense during the season. The Cardinal team qualified to play in the Sun Bowl, however Luck did not play after injuring a finger on his throwing hand, which required surgery.
