Hutchinson, a defenseman for the Penguins, was originally selected in the second round of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft by the Nashville Predators. He made his NHL debut for the Predators in 19 games during the 2003-04 season, only to be traded to the Carolina Hurricanes on July 29, 2007, for a third round selection in the 2008 draft. On July 17, 2007, Hutchinson was traded again, this time to the New York Rangers along with Joe Barnes and a third round selection in the 2008 draft. The Hurricanes received Matt Cullen in the trade.
