Andrew Garcia is a top 24 contestant on the hit show American Idol. Garcia is a musician and stay-at-home dad. After he was accepted into the top 24, he broke down, saying "this is for my family," partly in shock. For his first live performance, he sang "Sugar We're Going Down," originally by Fallout Boy. Simon Cowell was looking forward to hearing Garcia more than anyone else, but was disappointed. He wasn't original or interesting according to Cowell, and was too intense. Kara DioGuardi felt it was a strange rendition of the song, but hopes to see him for many more weeks. Randy Jackson also felt the arrangement was weird, but loves Garcia as a musician. Ellen DeGeneres felt his performance of "Straight Up" during Hollywood week was when he shined and she wants to see him open up more.
First, Andrew spoke about his love of break dancing. He performed James Morrison's "You Give Me Something" without his guitar. Randy loves James Morrison, but does not think that was a vibe for him tonight and the performance was pitchy. He wants to see him with a singer-songwriter vibe with his guitar. Ellen disagrees. She thinks there were a few pitch problems, but will have trouble meeting the expectation from the Paula Abdul song. Kara agrees and feels that he needs to surprise them. Simon is frustrated with Andrew because he has not chosen the right song for 2 weeks. Simon feels that Andrew is better than OK and is disappointed.
Even as a member of the top 12, judges didn't give his performances praise like they did in Hollywood week. Many judges felt he isn't performing the songs with emotion, as he isn't connecting with the songs.
As a top 11 contestant, Garcia was mentored by Miley Cyrus, who made him put the guitar down and concentrate on the song after he forgot the lyrics many times. After hearing his live performance, Randy Jackson said "it wasn't good man." Randy called it the wrong song choice. Ellen hopes his fans pull him through, as it wasn't fantastic. Kara feels bad for him, but thinks Andrew doesn't know what to do on stage. Simon thinks he's had enough time to sort himself out, but that Garcia "sucked the soul out of the song and made yourself really, really corny."
