Anders Fogh Rasmussen is the current Prime Minister of Denmark and serves as the secretary-general of NATO. He is also the leader of Denmark's Venstre party.
On April 4, 2009, Rasmussen was appointed as the secretary-general of NATO, replacing former head Jaap de Hoop Scheffer. Political Background
In 1978, Rasmussen won a seat on the Danish Parliament. In 1987, he became the Minister of Taxation. He then became the Minister for Economy and Taxation in 1990. In 1992, he resigned after allegations that he provided the Folketing with false information regarding postponement of bills. In July of 2002, Rasmussen became a rotating President for the European Union. It ended in December of that same year. He is currently a front-runner to become the first permanent President of the European Council in 2009. His strongest competitor is said to be Tony Blair, the former British Prime Minister.
