Anaheim Ducks

Formerly named the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, the Anaheim Ducks play in the Pacific Division of the NHL's Western Conference. The team joined the NHL in 1993 as the Mighty Ducks, named after a Disney movie with the same name, which made sense since the owner was the Disney Corporation and the team would be playing near Disneyland. In 2005 when Henry & Susan Samueli took over possession of the team, they changed the name to the Anaheim Ducks cementing the end of the Disney era.

Anaheim's best season so far was the 2006-07 season when they finished with a regular season record of 48-20-14 and 110 pts. Their worst? 1997-98 with a record of 26-43-13 and 65 pts.http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nhl/anaheim/mducks.html

The first thing on the agenda in 1993 for the Might Ducks was to pick up quality players for the fledgling team. They grabbed Paul Kariya in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft in the fourth overall pick. As Paul Kariya was making his presence known in the NHL, the Ducks added Teemu Selanne in 1995. In Selanne's first full year in the NHL, the 1996-97 season, he added a team leading 51 goals to the Ducks record for the year.

Kariya' 1997-98 season was marred by contract negotiations and signing difficulties. He eventually signed in December, but was injured soon there after. But with everything worked out, the 1998-99 season had Kariya scoring 101 points, second to Selanne's 107 points.

The Ducks finished in last place from the 1999-2000 until the 2001-02. The team was floundering badly and was in desperate need of changes. The Ducks hired Mike Babcock as the coach for the 2002-03 season. With the new coach and new players like Steve Thomas, Rob Niedermayer, and Sandis Ozolinsh, the team recorded its best season in franchise history with a record of 40-27-9-6 and finished in second place. They played the New Jersey Devils for the Stanley Cup, but lost in 7 games, 4-3.

Captain Paul Kariya opted to sign as a free Agent with the Colorado Avalanche for the 2003-04 season. The stunned management replaced him with Sergei Fedorov of the Detroit Red Wings. Federov never lived up to the hopes Anaheim had for him and was eventually traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Following the 2004-05 lockout, Selanne returned to Anaheim, and Scott Neidermayer. The Ducks went into the playoffs, but were eliminated from Stanley Cup by the Edmonton Oilers in the Conference Finals of the 2005-06 season.

For the 2006-07 season, the Mighty Ducks changed uniforms and changed their name to the "Anaheim Ducks." They also added Chris Pronger to their roster. They went off like a rocket at the beginning of the season. But in January, 2007, both Neidermayer and Pronger were injured. But even though, they still finished the regular season in first place.

The Ducks met the Minnesota Wild in the quarterfinals and took the win 4 games to 1. They next met the Vancouver Canucks in the conference semifinals and defeated them in 5 games. They got into the Stanley Cup Finals by defeating the Detroit Red Wings in 6 games, winning 4-2. They defeated the Ottawa Senators in 5 games (4-1) taking the Cup for the first time in franchise history.

The Ducks made it into the playoffs the next two years, but came up short in the 2009-10 season.http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nhl/anaheim/mducks.html

Anaheim Ducks 2009-10

The Ducks finished the 2009-10 season out of the playoffs with a record of 39-32 -11 for a total of 89 points. Prior to the beginning of the 2009 season, the Ducks traded Pronger to the Philadelphia Flyers. Beuchemin and Rob Niedermayer moved on as free agents, and Giguere was traded to the Maple Leafs. The team was also plagued by injuries and even though their record improved in the second half of the season, it was too little, too late.
