Plot Synopsis

Jerry Mulligan (Gene Kelly) is an American artist struggling to establish his reputation as a painter in Paris, while his friend Adam is trying to simultaneously succeed as a concert pianist. A wealthy socialite, Milo Roberts, meets Mulligan and, interested in him, decides to become his patroness. Mulligan himself is in love with Lise Bouvier, but Bouvier is also admired by Mulligan's friend, Henri who had rescued her family during World War II.

The story-line is punctuated by choreographed dances set to classic Gershwin tunes, including "Love is Here to Stay," "I got Rhythm," and "'S Wonderful."

"Count a bewitching French lassie by the name of Leslie Caron and a whoop-de-do ballet number one of the finest ever put upon the screen, as the most commendable enchantments of the big, lavish musical film that Metro obligingly delivered to the Music Hall yesterday."Bosley Crowther, The New York Timeshttp://movies.nytimes.com/movie/review?_r=1&res=9A02E0D81530E03ABC4D53DFB667838A649EDE

"An American in Paris is a product of many talents and a triumph of teamwork. Actress Caron, a young (19) French ballet dancer discovered by Kelly, combines dancing skill with a fetching simplicity and the plump-cheeked freshness of a Renoir model. The script, by Alan Jay Lerner, bounces wittily along under the direction of Vincente Minnelli. The Gershwin score brims with a dozen of his works, some heard only in snatches, some unfamiliar, ... played by Gershwin's leading interpreter, Pianist Oscar Levant, who doubles as a dour comedian."—TIME Magazine http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,859413,00.html
