Former Chicago reporter Amy Jacobson filed a lawsuit against the CBS-owned television station WBBM TV in July 2008, a year after the station aired a video of her in a bikini at the home of Craig Stebic, the husband of a missing Plainfield, Illinois woman. Jacobson claims the television station aired the tape to "boost ratings." She sued the station for defamation after she lost her job at rival station WMAQ as a result of the video. In February 2009, a judge ruled that four of the eight count of defamation in the lawsuit can go forward.Chicago Tribune: Jacobson wins round one in court against CBS (February 17, 2009)
The Tape and the Lawsuit
Amy Jacobson was fired from her job at WMAQ TV shortly after rival station WBBM TV ran a story featuring the reporter in a swimsuit at the home of Craig Stebic. Stebic's estranged wife, Lisa Stebic, vanished in April 2007, and Jacobson was covering the story. Jacobson says she went to the Stebic home at the invitation of Stebic's sister, and wound up swimming with Stebic's children. Jacobson's lawsuit claims WBBM employees edited the tape so it would appear that she had an inappropriate relationship with Stebic.ABA Journal: Ex-NBC Reporter Sues Rival CBS Station for Airing... (July 8, 2008) Stebic was named as person of interest in the disappearance, but was never charged with any crime. Lisa Stebic has not been found.
