This is the travel page for Amsterdam. Rich in culture, entertainment, history and romance, Amsterdam has been called "Venice of the North," well-known for its museums, such as Rijksmuseum, Rembrandt House Museum and the Van Gogh Museum, which holds the worlds largest collection of Vincent van Gogh paintings. Perhaps Amsterdam is most notorious for its red districts, where liberal coffeeshops legally sell marijuana and prostitution is legal. The government has recently begun a campaign to clean up those areas, and some question whether the liberal attitudes toward these activities are on the wane.

- La Rive (French), Phone: 020-520-3264 Google Map
- Frommer's Exceptional Rating: "The dining room overlooks the Amstel River through tall French windows, and in summer it opens onto a waterside terrace. Cherry-paneled walls punctuated with tall book-filled cabinets suggest a private library called into service for a dinner party"
- Fodor's Review: "Located within the Amstel Hotel -- the accommodation of choice for royalty, dignitaries, and rock stars -- La Rive is the city's unparalleled purveyor of refined French and Mediterranean cuisines."
- Zagat Well Rated: "'[Y]ou'd be hard-pressed to find a grander dining room' or more 'wonderful' staff to 'wait on you hand and foot'..."
- Christophe (French), Phone: 020-625-0807 Google Map
- Fodor's Review: "The ever-changing menu -- always loaded with vegetarian options -- may include entrees such as roasted lobster with soft garlic and small "la ratte" potatoes, or sweetbreads of veal with rosemary, asparagus, and compote of preserved lemon."
- Lonely Planet Recommended: "Lobster dishes, duck-liver terrine and unusual elegance keep Jean-Christophe Royer's Michelin-starred restaurant busy every night."
- Zagat Well Rated: "'Brilliantly inventive' and 'beautifully presented' 'dishes that combine upscale French cuisine' with 'Mediterranean ingredients'..."
- Restaurant Vermeer (French), Phone: 020-556-4885 Google Map
- Fodor's Choice: "With its milk-white walls, dramatic black-and-white patterned floors, Delft plates, fireplace hearths, and Stern Old Dutch chandeliers, this stately place does conjure up the amber canvases of the great Johannes."
- Zagat Well Rated: "'Outstanding cuisine' is a hallmark of this 'top-class' 'favorite' in the Centrum's NH Barbizon Palace Hotel..."
- Yamazato Restaurant at Hotel Okura (Japanese), Phone: 020-678-8351 Google Map
- Concierge.com Recommedation: "Situated in the south-side's Okura Hotel (the favorite home-away-from-home of Japanese tourists and businessmen), Yamazato's dining room establishes its traditional values upfront, with long picture windows framed by rice-paper screens looking out on a tranquil Japanese garden."
- Zagat Well Rated: "'For real Japanese food, this is the place to be in the Netherlands'..."
Amsterdam Moderate Restaurants
- Amsterdam (Continental), Phone: 020-682-2666 Google Map
- Frommer's Exceptional Rating: "You dine amidst a buzz of conviviality in the large, brightly lit former pumping hall, which had been so carefully tended by the water workers that some of its elegant decoration didn't even need repainting."
- Fodor's Review: "Now, under a sky-high ceiling, one can dine on honestly rendered French and Dutch dishes -- from rib-eye bearnaise and steak tartare to wonderful fish dishes like grilled tuna with ratatouille -- in a bustling atmosphere favored by families and larger groups."
- De Kas (French), Phone: 020-462-4562 Google Map
- Frommer's Very Highly Recommended: "Organic, Mediterranean-style greens and herbs come fresh from an adjacent working hothouse and garden and from the restaurant's own farm."
- Fodor's Review: "For diners it's equally sumptuous, especially since the setting harbors two such very un-Dutch commodities as maximum light and a giddy sense of vertical space thanks to the glass roof.""'
- Zagat Well Rated: "[E]xpect an 'absolutely enchanting' experience as you 'inhale the heady fragrances' of 'fresh vegetables and herbs' growing all around you."
- Tempo Doeloe (Indonesian), Phone: 020-625-6718 Google Map
- Frommer's Very Highly Recommended: "For authentic Indonesian cuisine from Java, Sumatra, and Bali, this place is hard to beat. Though its local reputation goes up and down with the tide, it's invariably busy."
- Fodor's Review: "For decades, this has been a safe and elegant -- albeit somewhat cramped -- place to indulge in that spicy smorgasbord of the gods, the Indonesian rice table."
- Zagat Well Rated: "'[B]ut real foodies would travel far for cooking this authentic'..."
- Gare De L'Est (French, Mediterranean), Phone: 020-463-0620 Google Map
- Frommer's Very Highly Recommended: "A meal at this restaurant is an altogether good reason to make a trip to a part of town that's becoming ever more fashionable."
- Lonely Planet Recommended: "Portuguese tiles and glowing Middle Eastern lamps adorn the interior, and courtyard seating exudes good vibes."
Amsterdam Affordable Restaurants
- The Pancake Bakery (Dutch), Phone: 020-625-1333 Google Map
- Frommer's Very Highly Recommended: "There are several dozen varieties, almost all of which make for a full meal. The satisfyingly large -- you might even find them heavy -- pancakes come adorned with all sorts of toppings, both sweet and spicy."
- Fodor's Review: "It's hard to go wrong when going out for Dutch pancakes in Amsterdam. But the quaint Pancake Bakery rises above the pack of similar eateries with its medieval vibe, canal-side patio, and a mammoth menu with more than 70 choices of sweet and savory toppings."
- Café Bern (Dutch), Phone: 020-622-0034 Google Map
- Fodor's Choice: "This dark and woody cafe, as evocative as a Jan Steen 17th-century interior, has been serving the same cheese fondue for decades, and for good reason: it's just about perfect, especially if you enhance digestion -- and the frolic factor -- with plenty of orders from the fully stocked bar."
- Lonely Planet Recommended: "Indulge in a fondue frenzy at this delightfully well-worn brown cafe. People have been flocking here for nearly 30 years for the gruyere fondue as well as the entrecote."
- Bakkerswinkel (Dutch), Phone: 020-489-8000 Google Map
- Fodor's Choice: "This genteel yet unpretentious bakery/tearoom evokes an English country kitchen, one that lovingly prepares and serves breakfasts, high tea, hearty-breaded sandwiches, soups, and divine (almost manly) slabs of quiche."
Amsterdam Vegetarian Restaurants
- Golden Temple Phone: 020-626-8560 Google Map
- Frommer's Highly Recommended: "The menu livens things up, though, with its unlikely roster of Indian, Middle Eastern, and Mexican dishes. This could make for a rewarding mix-and-match game if only the small print didn't all but instruct you to keep flavors apart."
- Happy Cow Excellent Rating (Note: Community Ratings; Subject to Change)
- Bolhoed Phone: 020-626-1803 Google Map
- Frommer's Very Highly Recommended: "Even the entrees with brown rice and tofu taste good. If you want to go whole hog, so to speak, and eat vegan, most dishes can be prepared that way upon request."
