Amoxicillin is a moderate-spectrum antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections(usually streptococcus, staphylococcus, gonorrhea, e. coli and salmonella).MedLinePlus: Amoxicillin It is better absorbed orally than similar medications. For that reason, it is usually the first antibiotic prescribed for a wide variety of infections. Amoxicillin is in a class of antibiotics that includes penicillin and penicillin derivatives, and can sometimes trigger allergic reactions in people allergic to penicillin.

Amoxicillin should be completely used up; if you are prescribed twenty days of it, it is likely that most symptoms will abate before all twenty days are finished, but the infection still exists. In such cases, the likelihood of the infection recurring, and becoming resistant to the amoxicillin, is increased. Amoxicillin is a synthetic molecule designed to be more resistant to stomach acid.
