The American Staffordshire Terrier descends from the English breed, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, originally bred for fighting in Staffordshire, England. The American Staffordshire was developed by US breeders to have heavier bodyweight and a bigger head than its UK cousin.http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/americanstaffordshire.htm
The breed was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1936. Although banned in many countries, states and localities, they are often illegally used for dog fighting.
Health Problems
Although a generally healthy breed, American Staffordshire terriers may face hip problems. They may also suffer from eye problems such as cataracts and heart problems such as congenital heart disease.
Sports or Activities
Originally bred for dog fighting, the breed has also been used in farming and hunting. Many families keep American Staffordshire terriers as guard dogs. Although they are not naturally aggressive, they can be forceful without proper discipline. This possibility of aggression makes them a poor choice for families with children.
