An 8.3-magnitude struck the American Samoa island region on September 29, 2009. It was located roughly 110 miles from Hihifo, Tonga, and 125 miles from Apia, Samoa. The earthquake was followed by a strong aftershock and a massive tsunami, which hit the American Samoa capital of Pago Pago.
The original quake measured 7.9, but it was later upgraded. The shallow depth of 21.7 miles prompted a tsunami warning to be issued after the shake. The warning reached the American Samoa, New Zealand and Hawaii, among other areas.http://www.prh.noaa.gov/ptwc/messages/pacific/2009/pacific.2009.09.29.180334.txt
