  • Background

The American Music Awards was established in 1973 by Dick Clark to compete with the Grammys. After the move of that year's show to Nashville, Tennessee, CBS picked up the Grammy telecasts from ABC which had broadcast its first two shows in 1971 and 1972. Winners are selected by a national poll of 20,000 music fans. Nominees are determined by music industry sales and radio airplay.
