American Idol Recap
- Top 9 Performance Night
- Welcome to another episode of American Idol! It's down to the top 9, Randy thinks they really brought it last week, but wants to see who will "bring it" tonight. Kara wants to see people take classics and put a modern spin on it. Paula claims to have nothing hidden under her dress this week. Simon wants all the contestants and Ryan to be amazing. (Weird moment with that comment.)
- Tonights theme is popular downloads on iTunes night.
- This week, the contestants visited the American Top 40 Studio, made popular by Casey Kasem.
- First up is Anoop Desai, he'll sing "Caught Up" by Usher. He's ready for a change from what he's been doing for the past few weeks and wants to sing a song he would relate to.
- Photobucket Video: Anoop Desai "Caught Up" (Time: 6:04)
- Randy thinks that Anoop picked up his swagger, but didn't feel the song was the right choice for him. The vocals were good. Kara thinks that when you pick Usher, you have to go a little crazy with it, she feels like a bunch of frat guys dared him to get up and sing Usher. Paula wasn't sure at first, but is glad that he's gone back to his playful side. She said that his vocals sounded really good, but advised him to work on his stage presence more. Simon thought it was a "complete and utter mess." He didn't like that Anoop came over as a "wanna-be" and it failed, giving him a headache.
- Next up is Megan Joy. She's be singing "Turn Your Lights Down Low" by Bob Marley and then Lauryn Hill. She's really excited about this week because Megan is singing a song that she "absolutely loves." On stage, it looks like she's wearing a plethora of Mardi Gras beads? That's, well, different.
- Photobucket Video: Megan Joy "Turn Your Lights Down Low" (Time: 6:00)
- Kara said "I really like you, but I think you're in trouble." She went on to say that it's not just the song choice, it was the register Megan sang the song in. (The whole time Kara was speaking, someone in the audience kept yelling that Kara sounded like a broken record. It appeared to unnerve Kara a bit.) Paula thinks that at this stage of the competition, Megan needs to take us by surprise and dig deeper. Simon said the song was boring, indulgent and monotonous. "Everything we liked about you is disappearing." "It was so boring." Randy agreed, saying that it took forever. He went on to say that just because he loves a song doesn't mean he has any business singing it.
- Danny Gokey will be singing "What Hurts The Most" by Rascal Flatts. He thinks they are modern country and very relevant. Danny is ready to put some real emotion in the song.
- YouTube Video: Danny Gokey "What Hurts The Most" (Time: 1:40)
- The audience won't stop clapping so Paula can speak. When they finally simmer down, Paula said "Danny, this is where you thrive. From the first note to the cadence, you leave me wanting more." Simon said they weren't on the same page last week, but feels this week was his best performance yet. It was "so much better than the first two. That's what this is about, get a great song, sing it brilliantly, sing your version." (Simon even clapped for Danny.) Randy feels like tonight's show started right here. He feels Danny showed his range, but with all that emotion coming out Randy told him not to be afraid to rip the mic out of the stand and start rockin it. Kara felt that Danny moved everyone in this room emotionally. "The goosebumps I was talking about, I had some of those."
- Allison Iraheta will sing "Don't Speak" by No Doubt and will play the guitar for the first time on the show.
- YouTube Video: Allison Iraheta "Don't Speak" (Time: 1:32)
- Randy began by saying that she's got the voice, but she was a little ahead of the beat. He loved that she came out with the guitar, "but dude, what are you wearing!?" Randy says he has "mad love" for Allison, but didn't get her outfit at all. Kara said the rock in Allison comes out in her voice, that her outfit was distracting. "You don't have to try, you just are." Paula thought having the guitar was nice and feels that Allison will skate by right to the finish line. Simon said "you can't ignore the outfit, it looked like something out of the Adams Family or something." He thought it was a bit "dressy-uppy like she was trying to be a rock star, plus she shouted the song."
- Scott MacIntyre will sing "Just The Way You Are" by Billy Joel. Scott looks up to Joel as a performer and a songwriter. He looks forward to showing more emotion in the song and escaping the bottom 3 this week.
- Photobucket Video: "Just The Way You Are" Scott MacIntyre (Time: 5:02)
- Kara thinks Scott made some very smart decisions picking this song. She feels the song came from and honest place, and she loves his new look. Paula says that out of all the contestants to know she's most proud of him, not because of his "challenge," but that everything he does makes her forget about that "challenge." Simon said that it's his best performance "by a country mile. It's a different Scott, we've got the Ryan Seacrest hair, you're very luck for not listening to madam's advice about not playing piano." Randy interjected saying it was "the best of the night."
- Matt Giraud admits to being surprised being in the bottom 3 last week, and is excited to sing a song that he wants. He'll sing "You Found Me" by The Fray. He's ready for something powerful and current.
- YouTube Video: Matt Giraud "You Found Me" (Time: 1:32)
- Paula appreciates that he went for a contemporary song, but that she misses what they fell in love with about him and it was a sound-alike to the lead singer of The Fray. Simon thinks Matt should be happy because they don't like him this week. It felt uptight and put-on, and not a commercial song. Simon wants him to choose a great song and do what he does best. Randy said the problem for him was that it was the wrong song, that Matt has more "chops than that." Kara says that he needs to commit to either the rock side of pop or the R&B side of pop.
- Lil Rounds struggled with the song choice, but decided to go with "I Surrender" by Celine Dion in hopes that the judges and America both love it.
- Photobucket Video: Lil Rounds "I Surrender" (Time: 5:58)
- Randy said this wasn't his original song choice for her, but she sang it really really well and showed that she has vocal skills but she needs to "young it up." Kara agreed and said that Lil has unbelievable range, she wants to see more of the original Rounds back. Paula doesn't want to see the adult contemporary Lil Rounds again, she wants to see the joy that Lil brought when they first met her. Simon agrees with the other judges, he found it quite similar to a wedding performance, this was so old-fashioned and the personality is being sucked out of her. "You've got to stop this, you're too good."
- Ryan brought one of Lil's daughters on stage to "punch Randy for talking mean to mommy." (Lil let a few tears leak out watching Ryan and Randy interact with her daughters.) Instead of punching him, she gave Randy a huge bear hug and didn't let go.
- Coming back from commercial, Ryan and Randy are embraced in a hug. (Weird.)
- Adam Lambert will sing "Play That Funky Music" by Wild Cherry. He's aiming to make it fresh and original, completely switching up from his toned down performance from last week.
- YouTube Video: *YouTube Video: Adam Lambert "Play That Funky Music White Boy" (Time: 1:52)
- Paula said "true genius does not fulfill expectations, true genius shatters it." She compared him to Steven Tyler of Aerosmith and Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones. Simon said it was brave and was glad to be rid of the karaoke nonsense that's been on the show. He doesn't feel it will be as popular as last week's, but doesn't think it matters right now. Randy thought it would be corny, but is glad that Adam worked it out, he's definitely in the "star zone." Adam stopped to thank Ricky Minor and the band for the great arrangement. Kara can't wait to see what Adam does every week, "it's like Studio 57 out here!" (It's supposed to be Studio 54 Kara.)
- Kris Allen will close out the evening with "Ain't No Sunshine" by Bill Withers. He'll put up the guitar and play the piano for the first time this week as he tries to make the song unlike anything the audience has ever heard before.
- Photobucket Video: Kris Allen "Ain't No Sunshine" (Time: 3:30)
- Randy said that right now, in this moment "you've been slaying em. One of the best performances of the night, I'm loving you! Loving you!" Kara added that she's got 3 words for him. "That is artistry." (And she counted right this time.) Paula said that he's paced this competition to his strengths and that should be the first cut on his album. Simon said confidence is what he brought tonight, he liked seeing Kris behind the keyboard and this is his best performance to date.
- Revealing the Top 8
- The show started with quotes from the judges towards the contestants. Over 36 million votes came in. (The same as last week if I remember correctly.)
- Lady GaGa and David Cook will perform tonight.
- Randy said, same as last night, that just because you like a song doesn't mean you can sing it. Paula thinks the contestants have the worlds greatest platform to perform from and wants them to know who they are and be confident in themselves. She feels they all can reach their potential. Simon thinks Anoop, Matt and Megan should be worried tonight.
- The Ford commercial was titled "Mixed Up Idol" featuring the Ford Fusion. The group performance tonight is "Don't Stop Believing" by Journey.
- Megan, Matt and Kris are asked to stand on the other side of the stage.
- Adam, Lil, and Allison are sent to center stage.
- That leaves Scott, Danny and Anoop on stage left.
- Which group is the bottom three? We'll find out after the break.
- David Cook performed his new single "Come Back To Me."
- David has extended his tour "until his hair falls out, sometime in August." Ryan presented him with his first platinum record award.
- Time for some results. Kris is safe. Matt gets tricked by Ryan, but is safe. Megan is in the bottom three after telling Simon she doesn't care what he thinks about her performance. Lil is safe. Allison is in the bottom three. Danny is safe. Scott is safe, Anoop is the last in the bottom three.
- Lady GaGa sang her new single "Poker Face."
- Anoop is safe. Simon said because she said earlier "she didn't care, so neither do we. We will not use the veto on you, this is now your swan song." Ouch. So that's it, not even Vote For The Worst could save Megan.
