American Idol Top 8 Performances
- This week featured songs from the year each contestant was born. Ryan showed photos of the judges when they were young, then Paula turned the table on Ryan, showing a buck-toothed toddler.
- Danny Gokey performed first, as he was the oldest of the remaining contestants. He sang Mickey Gilley's version of "Stand By Me."

- Randy said when Danny first came out, I didn't love the arrangement. "You made me love it even if I didn't love the arrangement. You've got some talent!" Kara agreed, wondering about the arrangement. She said it kept going and going, "you did your own thing and you did it well." Paula added that everyone that follows him tonight will have to run fast to catch up. She liked the arrangement and said it was "very amazing." Finally, Simon thought the beginning was good, the middle was lazy and the end was terrific. "Overall, great."
- Kris Allen was the second to perform. He sang "All She Wants To Do Is Dance" by Don Henley.
- Photobucket Video: Kris Allen "All She Wants To Do Is Dance" (Time: 5:30)
- Kara began the critique saying she's a huge fan, but it felt like music class work and lost a lot of it's youth. Paula said that Kris is heartfelt and genuine and he's one of the most likable contestants they've ever had on the show. Simon agreed that he's likeable, but called the performance indulgent and boring, and it was a stupid song choice. Randy thinks the same as Simon, it was self-indulgent and he didn't understand the song choice. Randy admitted to listening more to the band then he was of Kris.
- Lil rounds sang "What's Love Got To Do With It" by Tina Turner.
- Photobucket Video: Lil Rounds "What's Love Got To Do With It" (Time: 6:35)
- Paula said that Lil looked very hot tonight, she felt it was important for Lil to take her own liberties this week, however, being a brilliant vocalist will only get you so far. I don't feel you lead the song. Simon said they are not looking for a second or third rate Tina Turner, it was a ghastly copy-cat performance and it's like we've lost you. He asked her to start becoming original. Randy agreed with both Simon and Paula and feels like Lil isn't listening to the judges advice. Kara said it's making the leap from a singer to an artist and advised her to work on her lower range.
- Anoop sang "True Colors" by Cyndi Lauper.
- Photobucket Video: Anoop Desai "True Colors" (Time: 5:45)
- Randy said that Anoop pulled it back and "can actually sing, it was a very nice vocal, I like that dude!" Kara added that Anoop controlled the song and didn't let it control him. Paula felt his choice of song was flawless and "you showed your true colors, just like a rainbow. Fantastic." Simon compared Anoop to a singing yo-yo, one week he's up, the next is down. "I didn't think it was fantastic."
- Scott MacIntyre sang "The Search is Over" by Survivor. He played the guitar instead of the piano.
- Photobucket Video: Scott MacIntrye "The Search Is Over" (Time: 5:27)
- Kara commended Scott for coming out there playing a guitar with such a difficult, he had some good moments, but also had some off moments. Paula gave him credit for stepping away from his comfort zone in his piano. She was a bit surprised he chose to play an electric guitar instead of an acoustic, Scott piped in and responded "it's my punk side coming out." Paula added that his high notes came off a screeching a bit. Simon recommended that Scott go back to the piano next week because that's where he's comfortable. It was a very boring song and it absolutely didn't work. Randy said the problem for him was that it was all OK, the song was OK, the vocals were OK. Randy wants him to step it up.
- Allison Iraheta sang "I Can't Make You Love Me" by Bonnie Raitt.
- Photobucket Video: Allison Iraheta "I Can't Make You Love Me" (Time: 5:13)
- Paula said that when you hear one note, you know it's Allison singing. She loved the tenderness Allison added to the song. Simon thought it was very good, but wants to make Allison more likable, he's unsure if her personality is coming out like it should. He wants to know more about her. Randy added that "there was a girl the first season who won this who reminds me of you. She can sing her face off and so can you! You're one of the best of the night!" Kara was amazed that she made the content of the song believable, "let's go make a record."
- Matt Giraud sang "Part Time Lover" by Stevie Wonder.
- Photobucket Video: Matt Giraud "Part Time Lover" (Time: 3:28)
- Randy said that vocally, it was one of the best of the night. Kara said it was incredible on every level. Paula stood up and hollered "two words, standing O!" Simon added that it was a million times better than last week, well done."
- We're now officially over the hour-long broadcast and Adam hasn't even performed yet. But he's up next with "Mad World" by Tears for Fears.
- Photobucket Video: Adam Lambert "Mad World" (Time: 3:39)
- Simon had to raise his hand to speak, saying the bad news is they are running out of time, but the good news is that he'll be the only one speaking for the judges. "The only thing I'm going to do is give you a standing ovation." (Wow!)
