The night highlighted the songs of American Idol mentor and former Randy Jackson collaborator Mariah Carey. Also, former Idol finalist Elliot Yamin performed his hit single "Free" as a tribute to his recently deceased mother.
At the end of the performance show (which aired on April 15, 2008) judge Simon Cowell declared that the male performers "owned the night".
