American Girl Dolls

The American Girl brand of dolls was founded in 1986 by Pleasant Rowland, who sold the pre-teen girl character dolls by mail order. Rowland sold her company to Mattel in 1996. Rowland aimed to realistically portray girls from ages eight to twelve as she found the availability of such dolls lacking, instead only finding baby dolls and adult-aged dolls available when shopping for her nieces. After visiting Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia, she came up with the idea of creating historical settings, backgrounds and costumes for the dolls and created Pleasant Company.

The first line of dolls included Samantha Parkington, Kirsten Larson and Molly McIntire. A set of books, outfits, accessories and storage options were available for each character. The company later expanded the doll line and branched out in a variety of areas. A magazine for girls, various fiction and non-fiction publications, clothing and movies were all created under the American Girl umbrella.
