Company History

American Express began in 1850 as a shipping company. At this time, the U.S. Postal Service was very limited and only shipped small envelopes. The folks at American Express saw the U.S. Postal Service weakness as a new business opportunity for them to ship much bigger items including items like money and jewelry. It's the 1890s, American Express has decided to compete with the banks, by offering money orders. Jump to the 1950s, American Express debuted its first credit card, which was instantly popular. Later, in 1966, the company introduced its first gold card, in an effort to capture the upper level of business travel market share. American Express continues to lead with its brand with an large selection of consumer financial products ranging from the Blue Card to the ultra exclusive Black Card (only the very wealthy and famous individuals get access to this card).http://www.creditcards.com/credit-card-news/american-express-history-1264.php
