The Amazing Spider-Girl comic books exist in an alternate future world in the Marvel Universe where Peter Parker is no longer Spider-Man and his teenage daughter, May Parker, has taken up his legacy.Spider-Girl originally appeared in a one-off 1998 What If...? comic, but strong fan response led to the character getting her own series. The Spider-Girl series ran from 1998 to 2006, but poor sales led to its cancellation.
Subsequent paperback editions of the series meanwhile rekindled interest in the character, convincing Marvel to print Amazing Spider-Girl within the month after Spider-Girl's discontinuation.
Spider-Girl/Amazing Spider-Girl is currently the most successful Marvel comic with a female lead character.
