Amarone is a variety of straw wine or raisin wine produced in Italy. It is a high alcohol content red wine made from grapes dried on straw mats. The drying of the grapes concentrates flavor and sugar. It is a relatively expensive wine because of the time taken to produce the wine and resulting lower ratio of wine per ton of fruit.http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/12/14/WI4ITRJR7.DTL http://www.wineloverspage.com/italwineguide/amarone.phtml
Serving Information
Despite the name ("Amaro" means bitterness in Italian), Amarone is a very "sweet" tasting wine, though usually has a bit of tartness associated with it. Amarone has a high alcohol content as a result of the drying process, and is often paired with dessert or cheeses.http://www.wineloverspage.com/italwineguide/amarone.phtmlhttp://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/12/14/WI4ITRJR7.DTLVarieties
