On December 4, 2009, Amanda Knox, an American college student from Seattle was found guilty by an Italian court of murdering her roommate, British student Meredith Kercher. The murder of Kercher took place in 2007. Prosecutors argued that Sollecito, along with Rudy Guede, a so-called "drifter" from the Ivory Coast in Africa, held down Kercher, while Knox stabbed and killed her.
