Althingi is the national parliament of Iceland. It is one of the oldest parliaments of the world. Background
Althingi started in 930 AD when the Icelandic nation was born. All free citzens were allowed to attend the meetings. It was under the control of the Danish Monarchy until the 1800. It gained legislative power in 1874. In 1918 Iceland became a state under the rule of Denmark. The Republic of Iceland was established in 1944. The voting age is now 18. Althingi has 63 members now.
