Altervista.org is an Italian website that offers free web hosting services, including PHP and MySQL. With it, users can create websites, blogs, galleries and forums. They also provide a web searching service.
History
The site was opened on the December 22, 2000, without any funding. In 2002, due to a large flood of visitors, the site's hardware had to be upgraded. Since then, it has undergone massive design overhauls to become the site it is today. Altervista has approximately a 385 Alexa.com traffic rank and gets around ten thousand visits per day. As of July 2009, more than 816,000 websites had been created using Altervista.org.

Altervista, due to the services it offers, is an inherently social site, where users can make blogs, share pictures in galleries, create websites, and discuss things in forums.
