Based on the 1929 novel of the same name, 1930's All Quiet on the Western Front concerns the effects war has (and World War I had in particular) on men returning from the front lines. The film won Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Directing (Lewis Milestone) and was remade in 1979 as a TV movie.
The Sequel
Novelist Erich Maria Remarque followed up Western Front with The Road Back, which chronicled soldiers' fight to re-assimilate into society after service, was banned by the Nazis. The Universal Pictures film version—directed by James Whale of Frankenstein fame—was altered so that the film could be shown in Germany.
