  • Plot Synopsis

    All Quiet on the Western Front tells the story of Paul Baumer, a young infantryman in the German army during World War I. After a few early tragedies, Baumer and his friends regret joining the army as well as resent their commanding officers who do not face the same threat as the common soldier. While on leave, Baumer realizes he no longer fits in to society and has trouble relating with friends and family. Some time after that he meet some young women fighting with the opposition and comes to the realization that he genuinely likes them and they are not much different from himself. The books closes in 1918 as Baumer himself is killed, just as his friends were, fighting on the Western Front of the war.
