Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is a children's novel by Lewis Carroll that follows the adventures of a girl named Alice who falls into a new world through a rabbit hole. Lewis Carroll wrote the story for three little girls as they were on a river trip. One of the three girls was named Alice, and is the namesake in the story. Alice asked for a story with lots of nonsense and the resulting adventure is what the story teller Carroll made up as they traveled along. Carroll captured the story to paper afterwards, beginning the first of many versions of the printed books of Alice’s adventures.
Carroll chose Sir John Tenniel, a cartoonist to illustrate the book but had his own thoughts of what each character looked like and gave Tenniel instructions and input on the drawings. The first publication of the book was in 1865, three years after the boat trip that created it. The book’s original planned title was “Alice’s Adventures Underground” but changed before publication for fear it would not be seen as a children’s book. In 1889, Carroll rewrote the book and called it “The Nursery Alice” as a simplified book for young children. The nursery version took away some of the puns and added 20 large colored pictures for children to enjoy.
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was banned in China in 1931 as the Governor of Hunan said that animals should not use the human language and it was disastrous to put animals and humans on the same level. http://www.alice-in-wonderland.net/alice11.html
The stories Carroll presented in his Alice in Wonderland book series have been adapted to other books, movies, and songs. Disney has adapted the book for a live adapted film scheduled which released in US theaters on March 5, 2010. Tim Burton directs the new film and Johnny Depp stars as the Mad Hatter.
