Disney's 1951 animated film classic Alice in Wonderland is the best-known adaptation of the beloved Lewis Carroll children's book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The 1951 movie was prepared by Disney artists over a several year period of time using more than 750 artists. Walt Disney himself played and active role in the production of the movie and was said to have been very hands-on with overseeing the project. Disney was ultimately disappointed with the movie reviews but in time Alice in Wonderland has become known as one of the best animations.
The movie budget was $3 million USD a high amount for the period of time. Young Kathryn Beaumont was ultimately selected as the voice of Alice after several other choices did not materialize. Plot Synopsis
The story of Alice in Wonderland takes place in an underground world which Alice tumbles into when she follows white rabbit to see where he is going. Alice tumbles through the rabbit hole and enters an adventure which corresponds and relates to the concept of growing up. Alice literally grows and shrinks in the movie depending on what she eats or drinks. From so small she swims in her own tears to so large she can’t get through the door, Alice’s size plays a humorous symbolic part throughout the story.http://www.allwatchers.com/Topics/Info_29578.asp
As the story continues Alice meets the Cheshire Cat who seems to appear and disappear and confirms for Alice that everyone in Wonderland is mad. She meets the Mad Hatter and the March Hare who are constantly stuck at tea time. The Hatter explains that he killed time so he is perpetually stuck at 6 pm and always having tea. As Alice grows and shrinks through out the story, she ultimately faces the Queen of Hearts best known for her decapitations and her famous “Off with their heads” statements. As the story nears its end, Alice argues with the Queen when she tries to issue sentence before the verdict of a trial. The Queen of course orders “Off with her head” and Alice stands up to her declaring that “You're nothing but a pack of cards!” In the confusion of the attack of the pack of cards, Alice wakes up to find it has all been a dream. http://www.sabian.org/alicech12.htm
