  • Ali "Farka" Toure was a Mali multi-instrumentalist and performer widely recognized both across Africa and internationally, thanks in part to his friendship and musical collaborations with musician Ry Cooder.
  • Career

    Ali "Farka" Toure was the first musician to achieve recognition across the entire African continent, thanks in part to his fluency in more than four languages and his tendency to record songs in each. Exposure in France led to recognition across the continent, and eventually the United States. Toure's music has been used in a number of films, radio shows, and documentaries. In 2004, he became the mayor of his home town and used his own money to build infrastructure there. Bone cancer took his life in 2006.
