  • Algae is a photosynthetic organism, essential to most of the Earth's food chains. It is composed of single and multi-celled species, the largest being the saltwater kelp. Algae is not considered a plant, although it shares many features of plants such as chloroplasts.

    For humans, algae is a food source, organic fertilizer, pollution filter, and clean energy through biofuel.
