Russian hockey player Alexei Cherepanov was drafted 17th overall in the 2007 NHL draft by the New York Rangers. Cherepanov collapsed on the bench during an October 13, 2008, game and died of an apparent heart attack.ESPN.com: Cherepanov Collapses on Bench During Game, Dies... Heart Attack

Investigation
While the Russian state police were investigating Cherepanov's death, they revealed that he was playing hockey illegally. Career
Cherepanov began his career with the Avangard Omsk of the Russian Super League in 2006. He broke the single-season rookie scoring record, previously held by Pavel Bure, scoring 18 goals and 11 assists. In 2007, Cherepanov helped Russia win the silver medal at the World Ice Hockey Championships. Following his sophomore season in the Russian Super League, Cherepanov was drafted by the New York Rangers.
