Alexandria - named after Alexander the Great - has been an important centre in Egypt since ancient times when it was known for the Pharos, the famous lighthouse that was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Located where the Nile River meets the Mediterranean, today it's the second largest city in Egypt and the country's largest seaport.   • Alexandria National Museum - Established in 2003 and the keystone of Alexandria's re-emergence as a tourist destination, the Museum is housed in a spacious restored palace and contains about 1,800 artificacts that span centuries, incluidng the Pharaonic, Roman, Coptic and Islamic eras.   • Bibliotheca Alexandrina - Built partly to commemorate the ancient Library of Alexandria that was destroyed in antiquity, the modern version aims to emulate it as a beacon of learning, including four art galleries, four museums, a planetarium and a collection with materials donated from around the world.   • Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa - One of the more spectacular historic sites of the city, their name means "piles of shards".   • Corniche - The crown of modern Alexandria, this walkway stretches 16 miles in total (25km) along the city's waterfront, dotted with beaches, restaurants, open air vendors and more.   • Roman Amphitheatre - Kom El Dikka - Located in a modern neighbourhood near the center of the city, the amphitheatre dates from the 2nd century A.D., with additions and revising to the 6th century A.D.

  • Pompey's Pillar and Sarapeum - These Greco-Roman era two monuments are located on the same site. The Pillar, 25m high in red granite, was actually erected in honour of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, and later misnamed by medieval travelers who thought it the burying place of Pompey. Two sphinxes also adorn the site.
