The Alexandria Aquarium and Marine Life Museum was built in the 1930's and displays a collection of rare species of fish, crustaceans and turtles, along with marine life common to its location at the juncture of the Nile River and Mediterranean. The building was actually a castle once, now remodeled with corridors that are lined with water filled exhibits. Along with tourist displays, the Aquarium is home to the Marine Research Institute in association with the Alexandria University. http://www.gloss-sealevel.org/publications/documents/alexandria_survey_report.pdf
Alexandria Aquarium Visitors Guide
The Alexandria Aquarium is actually housed in the former Qaitbay Castle, located next to the Qaitbay Citadel in Alexandria's Eastern Harbour in the El Anfoushi neighbourhood. The Alexandria Aquarium is relatively small in size, and because it's located close to other major attractions, it can become quite busy. Your best bet is to visit in the morning.
The Aquarium is set up in long corridors lined with exhibits, including things like mummified fish along with the usual underwater tanks. You'll find marine creatures from the Red Sea and Mediterranean along with freshwater animals from the Nile and Amazon Rivers.
The museum is open daily from 9 am to 2pm. 2010 Admission is 25 Egyptian pounds (£E) http://egypttravelsearch.com http://www.princessegypt.com/entrance_fees.htm
