Plot Synopsis
Roger Grant (Tyrone Power) is destined by his family to become a great violinist. However, Roger himself is more interested in popular music, and auditions with his friend Charlie (Don Ameche) at a local saloon. The song they use for the audition, "Alexander's Ragtime Band" becomes a huge hit, and their band takes off. They are joined by Stella (Alice Faye), who does the lead vocals, and Roger and Stella quickly fall in love. Problem is, Charlie also fancies Stella. When Stella gets a chance to audition in New York, the band dissolve as tensions between the trio escalate. Eventually, however, true love conquers all. -

Reviews
"Despite Tyrone Powers' stiff turn in the lead, Henry King's Depression-era musical is well-crafted, boasting 28 of Irving Berlin's greatest hits, some nicely performed by Alice Faye at her prime. "—Emanuel Levy, "EmanuelLevy.com"http://www.emanuellevy.com/search/details.cfm?id=8741"Easily a tune every few minutes, all reliably executed, but the film?s insistence on musical comprehensiveness leaves room only for the barest of character development.
