National Hockey League left winger Alexander Ovechkin currently plays for the Washington Capitals.

Ovechkin was given extra security in early May of 2009, after a Pennsylvania teenager made a death threat against the star on an internet message board. Ovechkin previously played for the Dynamo Moscow in the Russian Hockey Super League for four seasons, beginning in 2001. He was then selected first overall in the 2004 NHL Draft by the Washington Capitals.

Ovechkin made his NHL debut on October 5, 2005 with the Capitals. He played 81 of 82 regular season games his rookie year, scoring 52 goals and 54 assists. He was selected for his first NHL All-Star Game in early 2006 and was given the Calder Trophy for the NHL's Rookie of the Year.

Ovechkin totaled 46 goals and 46 assists during the 2006-07 season. He also earned his second All-Star selection the same season. He improved his scoring during the 2007-08 season, totaling 65 goals. Following the season he was awarded the Art Ross Trophy, given to the NHL player who finishes the season with the highest point total.

Ovechkin scored his 200th NHL goal in a February 5, 2009, loss to the Los Angeles Kings.
