Alexander Graham Bell a native of Edinburg, Scottland, born on March 3, 1847, was a famous scientist and inventor best known for his invention of the telephone. After living in London for a time, he moved to Canada with his father in 1870, then in 1872 he moved to the United States. At that time he became a professor of vocal physiology at Boston University.
Bell's quest to find devices that would assist both his mother and wife, who were both deaf, led to his experimentation with sound. Bell is credited with 18 other patents in his name alone and 12 shared with other inventors. In 1988 he was part of a group of gentlemen who started the National Geographic Society.http://www.alexandergrahambell.org/ http://www.fundinguniverse.com/company-histories/National-Geographic-Society-Company-History.html The Alexander Graham Bell Association serves children and family who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Even though Alexander Graham Bell is usually associated with the invention of the telephone, there is a controversy surrounding this invention. The patent was granted to him by the U.S. patent office in 1876; however in 2002 the United States House of Representatives passed a bill giving credit for the invention of the telephone to Antonio Meucci. The Canadian Parliament passed a bill later that same year officially recognizing Bell as the inventor of the telephone. The controversy is still unresolved.http://www.lucidcafe.com/library/96mar/bell.html
