Prior to playing in the NFL, Smith played college football with the Utah Utes in the NCAA. He started three seasons, finishing with a 21-1 record as a starter and a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 6.1-1. NFL Career

Smith spent much of the 2007 season dealing with a shoulder injury. He only played/started in seven games, throwing for two touchdowns and four interceptions.
Smith missed the entire 2008 season after severely separating his throwing shoulder.
Smith regained his starting position in week 6 of the 2009 NFL season. He relieved Shaun Hill who was struggling in a game against the Texans, and quickly proceeded to throw 3 second half touchdowns passes to Vernon Davis. He would finish the year with 2,350 yards, 18 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions in only 10 games started.
