• In 2006, Alejandro González Iñárritu became the first Mexican director to ever be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director for his work on the film Babel. Iñárritu's 2000 film Amores Perros was also nominated for Best Foreign Language Film.
  • Brief Biography

Iñárritu began his career as a radio DJ in the mid-1980s at the popular Mexico City station WFM. After he began composing music for films, he tried his hand at directing in 1995 with a television movie, and made his big breakthrough in 2000 with his gritty look at crime and animal cruelty in Mexico, Amores Perros. He made his move to English language cinema with his critically acclaimed non-linear 2003 drama 21 Grams, a film which netted actors Naomi Watts and Sean Penn Oscar nominations. Babel was an international hit that sealed his reputation as an important and visionary director, although it lost the Academy Award for Best Picture to Martin Scorsese's The Departed.
