  • The American League Championship Series (ALCS) is a best four out of seven playoff series between the two winners of the American League Division series. The winner earns the right to represent the American League in the World Series.

    In 2008, the Boston Red Sox lost to the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League championship series. The Rays won the series 4 games to 3.

    The Red Sox defeated the Los Angeles Angels in the division series, while the Tampa Bay Rays defeated the White Sox in the other series.

    The Red Sox were the defending 2007 World Series champions.
