  • About Alcorn State University

Originally Oakland College, Alcorn State University occupied the site once Oakland closed its doors at the beginning of the Civil War. The property was sold to the state of Mississippi and was renamed Alcorn. In 1878, the university's name changed to Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College and was set to focus more on becoming a trade school and less on being a college. It wasn't until 1974 that the school transitioned into Alcorn State University and expanded its curriculum.Alcorn State University: Alcorn State University at a Glance
