  • Alberto Gonzales was the 80th Attorney General of the United States. He served under President George W. Bush. On August 27, 2007, United States Attorney General Alberto Gonzales resigned. The resignation came as a result of a growing number of inconsistencies and controversies following his April 19, 2007 testimony in front of Congress during the Attorney Firings scandal. Gonzales submitted his resignation by a letter addressed to President Bush on August 26, 2007. In a statement on August 27, 2007 Gonzales thanked the President for the opportunity serve his country and gave no indication of the reasons for his resignation or his future plans. President Bush praised Gonzales for his service and attributed the resignation to Gonzales' name having been "dragged through the mud" for "political reasons".
