Fujishock
In his first term as president, Fujimori was forced to respond to the hyperinflation and economic crisis in Peru, commonly thought to have been caused by the previous presidency of Alan Garcia. He enacted wide ranging reforms including a relaxation of many government regulations, a dramatic increase in the minimum wage, and the introduction of a large-scale government aid program. These initiatives became known as "Fujishock."
Human Rights Abuses
Fujumori has been criticized for and accused of several human rights abuses, most stemming from programs enacted against the Shining Path and terrorism. Fujimori has been implicated in the planning and implementation of several massacres, the activities of "death squads," and a large scale sterilization campaign.
