Alberta Oil Sands

  • The Athabasca Oil Sands (more commonly referred to as the Alberta Oil Sands) are large deposits of heavy crude oil mixed in with sand, clay and dirt that are located in the northeast section of Alberta, Canada. The deposits contain a mixture of crude bitumen, silica sand, clay minerals, and water.
  • Criticism

Critics of the Alberta Oil Sands project have noted that in order to process and extract the crude oil from the sand, large amounts of fresh water would be needed. The water would then be severely polluted and endanger local ecosystems.Celsias: The Most Destructive Project on Earth: Alberta's Tar Sands (March 4, 2008)

The process to extract the oil from the sands is relatively time consuming and inefficient. Since the area is covered by forest, the forest must first be cut down. For each barrel of oil produced, approximately two tons of dirt above the sands and two tons of tar sands themselves are dug up. To remove the oil from the sands, several barrels of water are heated and then this water, which has become contaminated in the process, is disposed of. This process produces three times more carbon dioxide than traditional drilling.National Geographic: Canadian Oil Scrapping Bottom (March, 2009)
