History
The Albany International Airport was originally located at a former polo field on Loudonville Road, three miles north of the city. It was moved to Westerlo Island when it became evident that the field was not suitable for an airport. In 1928, land was acquired from the Watervliet Shakers to build the new airport, consisting of 249 acres. Many famous pilots landed at this airport, including Charles A. Lindbergh, Amelia Earhart, James Doolittle and Clarence Chamberlain. -
