History of Alaska
Alaska is the largest state in the United States of America. It is also the least densely populated which explains the nickname of "The Last Frontier".
Alaska was purchased from Russia in 1867. In 1880 the mining camp founded by Richard Harris and Joe Juneau. Joe and Richard had listened to the advice of the members of the Tlingit and mined in Snow Slide Gulch and that was where they discovered gold nuggets. Word spread and the camp grew into a small town due to the miners that arrived to find their own fortunes. The name changed several times before the miners decided on the name Juneau. The current Capital of Alaska was the city of Sitka but once fur trading and Whaling declined around the turn of the 20th century, Juneau became the Capital of Alaska in 1906.
The state didn't become an organized territory until 1912. In 1959 Alaska became the 49th state of the United States of America.
