Independent politician Alan Keyes was the 16th Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs for President Ronald Reagan from 1985 to 1987. The author and former diplomat has run for the Republican nomination for President three times - in 1996, 2000, and 2008.
On May 15, 2009, Keyes was arrested on the campus of the University of Notre Dame while protesting the school's decision to award President Barack Obama an honorary law degree. He lead 40 people through the gates of the university, which fellow protesters and the former presidential candidate were warned by Notre Dame authorities not to do. This was the second time Keyes has been arrested for the same offense.USAToday: Keyes arrested at Notre Dame over... (May 15, 2009)
Keyes and Barack Obama
In February 2009 Keyes released a video on YouTube citing concerns over Barack Obama's citizenship qualifications to hold the office of president, as well as concerns over his massive spending as seen in programs such as the 2009 Stimulus Package. The constitution does require anyone running for president to be a natural born citizen. The dispute revolves around whether or not Obama was truly born in Hawaii or, as some claim, in Kenya.Top of the Ticket (LAT): Alan Keyes stokes Obama birth certificate... (February 21, 2009)
