Alan Garcia is the President of Peru and leader of the American Popular Revolutionary Alliance (APRA). Garcia's first term in office, from 1985 to 1990, was marked by severe economic crisis and social unrest. He lost his second bid for the presidency in 2001 to Possible Peru party member Alejandro Toledo, but was successfully installed for a second term in June 2006.
Garcia in Exile
Following his first term as President, Garcia was accused of corruption by his successor, authoritarian leader Alberto Fujimori. Garcia denied the charges and went into exile in Colombia and later France. The charges were eventually dropped by the Peruvian Supreme Court. Garcia returned to Peru in 2001, following Fujimori's resignation from office.
