The state of Alabama was admitted into the Union on December 14, 1819 as the 22nd state. At the end of the American Revolution, Great Britain relinquished control of all lands east of the Mississippi with the exception of Florida to the Unites States.
Alabama's constitution was adopted in 1901 and designates that there shall be one elected governor and a bicameral legislature consisting of a 35 member senate and a 105 member House of Representatives. The state sends two senators and seven representatives to the U.S. Congress in Washington DC and based on population has nine electoral votes.
Alabama residents must pass the following criteria to be allowed to vote; 01 Be a citizen of the United States 02. Be a citizen of Alabama and your county at the time of registration 03. Be 18 years old before any election 04. Not have been convicted of a felony punishable by imprisonment in the penitentiary (or have had your civil and political rights restored) 05. Not currently be declared mentally incompetent through a competency hearing.
Voter registration is closed during the ten days preceding an election. Applications must be postmarked or delivered by the eleventh day prior to the election
Early in Alabama politic history voting was dominated by the Democratic party. Then in the 1980s, Harold Guy Hunt became the first Republican to be elected governor in over a century. Since then, neither party can lay claim to controlling the governship of Alabama.
